Tortoreto, whose name derives from the numerous turtledoves that populated the medieval fields and woods, is today one of the pearls of the Teramo coast, famous for its beach of very fine sand, about 4 km long. This location has been awarded the prestigious Blue Flag, thanks to the environmental quality, the variety of tourist services and the care of the territory
Tortoreto is divided into two main areas:
• Tortoreto Lido, where the Hotel Quattro Palme is located, directly on the sea. Here you can walk along a well-kept tree-lined promenade or visit the suggestive statue of the Little Mermaid, symbol of the city.
• Tortoreto Alto, located 240 meters above sea level, is the historic village of the town, full of medieval charm. It is divided into:
• Torrevecchia: the oldest part, with the medieval castle.
• Terranova: the fortified heart, with narrow streets and picturesque brick houses.
• The Borgo: an area developed outside the castle walls, which extends towards the sea.
Since 2001, every week of Ferragosto, Tortoreto Alto hosts the evocative Palio del Barone, a historical reenactment that celebrates a 13th-century noble wedding with shows, flag-wavers and banquets in period costumes.
